Testaverde, Johnson solid for Cowboys

? Bill Parcells saw exactly what he wanted: Vinny Testaverde and Keyshawn Johnson hooking up again like old times.

Testaverde completed 17 of 24 passes for 240 yards and his first touchdown of the preseason, and Johnson had eight catches for 81 yards, helping the Dallas Cowboys beat Tennessee, 20-17, Monday night.

“The pass protection was good, we caught the ball well, we threw the ball well,” Parcells said. “We were trying to be aggressive in that regard.”

It was the best game so far for Testaverde and Johnson, who reunited with Parcells during the offseason. They were teammates in 1998 when the New York Jets went to the AFC title game.

“We’re trying to bring back some of that old magic,” Testaverde said. “We’ve got some great weapons. I’m going to try to utilize them all.”

Testaverde, the 40-year-old who became the Cowboys’ starter when Quincy Carter was released less than a week into camp, led the first-team offense to a touchdown for the first time in 11 preseason possessions.

“He was very good. This guy can pass, I told you,” Parcells said. “That’s what he can do if you block for him.”

While Testaverde and Johnson regained their old form, Eddie George did nothing against his old team.

With Parcells not trying to run the ball, George had just three yards on four carries against the Titans (2-1).

Tennessee wide receiver Tyrone Calico, bottom, lands under Dallas defender Tony Dixon in the first quarter. The Cowboys beat the Titans, 20-17, Monday in Irving, Texas.

“It was a little bit of emotion to see some of my teammates, coaches and trainers I was friends with,” George said. “I think our passing attack carried us pretty well.”

The Titans got touchdown runs from Chris Brown and Antowain Smith.

Titans’ Calico sprains both knees

Tennessee receiver Tyrone Calico sprained both knees Monday night when he was dragged down at the end of a run in the Titans’ 20-17 exhibition loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Calico’s legs folded under him when he was tackled by safety Roy Williams as he was going out of bounds on a run in the second quarter.

Coach Jeff Fisher said Calico seemed OK after the game. But he said both knees would be examined after the team returned home. Calico, a second-year player from Middle Tennessee State, had two catches for 41 yards, including a 37-yard gain. He is expected to be the Titans’ third receiver behind Derrick Masson and Drew Bennett.
