James F. Swoyer Jr.

? Services for James F. Swoyer Jr., 81, Oskaloosa, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church, Oskaloosa. Burial will follow in Hull Grove Cemetery, Winchester.

Mr. Swoyer died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center, Topeka.

He was born Feb. 19, 1923, in Lawrence, the son of James F. Sr. and Hazel N. Baker Swoyer. He moved to Oskaloosa at a young age and attended Oskaloosa schools. He graduated from Kansas University with a law degree in 1952.

Mr. Swoyer was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was an attorney in Oskaloosa for more than 52 years, and had also served as Jefferson County Attorney. He and his wife owned and operated the County Seat Variety Store in Oskaloosa for 22 years. He also had served as mayor of Oskaloosa.

He was a member of United Methodist Church, the American Legion, Order of the Eastern Star, and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was a member of Oskaloosa Masonic Lodge No. 14 for 50 years, and was a member of Scottish Rites in Lawrence. He also was a board member of the Kansas Crippled Children’s Assn.

He married Martha Ann Truman on July 13, 1952, in Hickman Mills, Mo. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Karl, Winchester; a brother, John, Winchester; a sister, Marjorie Brammell, Lawrence; and four grandchildren.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at O’Trimble Funeral Home in Nortonville. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the church in Oskaloosa.

The family suggests memorials to Kansas Crippled Children’s Assn. or Shriners Children’s Hospital, sent in care of the funeral home, 329 Main, Nortonville 66060.
