Waldorf clips Indians, 7-6

? Haskell Indian Nations University had hoped for a repeat of last season’s football victory over Waldorf College, and for more than three quarters Saturday HINU had a shot.

Haskell dominated Waldorf in nearly every offensive category, rolling up 236 total yards to Waldorf’s 70 and gaining five more first downs.

But a 13-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown pass by Waldorf quarterback Robert Cox tied the game at 6, and the extra point provided the dagger as HINU fell, 7-6, at Bolstorff Field.

The Fightin’ Indians certainly played well enough to win. Cody Wilson caught eight passes for 94 yards, singlehandedly outgaining Waldorf. Chad Murphy carried the ball 16 times for 53 yards, and quarterback Kaleb Harris racked up 126 yards passing.

But Matt Martens provided the only points for the Fightin’ Indians (0-1) with two field goals — one each in the second and third quarters.

Haskell will open at home Saturday against Trinity Bible College, a squad that was 0-9 in 2003.
