Vick’s backup leads Falcons

? The less the Atlanta Falcons see of Michael Vick, the more they like Matt Schaub.

For the second straight week, Schaub passed for three touchdowns, leading the Falcons past Cincinnati and their young quarterback, Carson Palmer, 37-10, in a preseason game Saturday.

Vick, expected to play the first half, was held out after aggravating a hamstring injury during pregame warmups.

“Michael’s hamstring was tight during warmups, and we decided as a staff not to play him tonight,” Falcons coach Jim Mora said. “We feel having a healthy Michael Vick going into the regular season is the way to go.”

For the second straight week, Schaub was a winning backup plan.

Guiding the Falcons to a 27-7 halftime lead, Schaub completed 14 of 20 passes for 214 yards and three touchdowns. The rookie from Virginia completed his first six passes.

“We got off to a great start, and that always helps build confidence,” Schaub said, giving credit to his receivers for “catching everything I was throwing them.”

Playing behind Vick in last week’s 27-24 preseason win over Minnesota, Schaub passed for 205 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions, but he didn’t expect to see as much playing time Saturday.

Ty Detmer and David Rivers took over at quarterback for Atlanta in the second half.

Vick is only 5-of-9 for 35 yards in limited preseason action. The Falcons play their final preseason game Friday at Washington. Vick first strained the hamstring Aug. 5, and he irritated the injury in last week’s win over Minnesota.

Palmer completed 12 of 26 passes for 171 yards with one interception.

Falcons cornerback DeAngelo Hall left the game late in the first half because of a left hip injury.

Ravens 17, Lions 6

Baltimore — Chester Taylor ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns, and the Ravens got a solid performance from their depleted defense.

Cornerback Chris McAlister remains a holdout, and the Ravens were without injured starters Anthony Weaver, Peter Boulware, Marques Douglas and Corey Fuller. But with middle linebacker Ray Lewis leading the way, Baltimore (2-1) did not yield a touchdown for the second time in three games.

Bucs 17, Dolphins 10

Tampa, Fla. — Chris Simms tightened his grip on Tampa Bay’s backup quarterback job, and Ryan Nece returned a fourth-quarter interception 55 yards for a touchdown. Simms completed 11 of 13 passes for 145 yards, remaining well ahead of Brian Griese for the No. 2 spot behind Brad Johnson.

Colts 30, Bills 17

Indianapolis — Mike Doss recovered a fumbled punt return and blocked another punt that went for a TD, Dominic Rhodes returned a kickoff 84 yards to set up another score, and Mike Vanderjagt kicked three field goals.

Buffalo’s backup quarterback, Travis Brown, left on a golf cart after taking a hit to his left knee. It was the second major injury to a Bills quarterback this week. First-round pick J.P. Losman broke his left leg in practice Tuesday.

Panthers 20, Patriots 17

Charlotte, N.C. — Rodney Peete found Walter Young for an 18-yard touchdown pass with 1:48 to play, rallying the Panthers past the Patriots. Jake Delhomme threw for 201 yards and a touchdown for Carolina, which has won eight straight preseason games.

Tom Brady again stung the Panthers’ defense, throwing for 217 yards and two touchdowns in the rematch of last year’s Super Bowl.

Adam Vinatieri, who won that game with a 41-yard field goal with 4 seconds left, missed a 56-yard attempt to tie it as time expired.
