Calvary Temple Assembly of God

There will be a baptismal service Sunday at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 S.W. 29th St. Terrace. It will follow the 10:30 a.m worship service.

The Boys and Girls Missionary Crusade will have a contest with their Buddy Barrels that will end in December.

Centenary United Methodist Church

The Rev. Judy Long O’Neal continues her six-part sermon series on the historical Jesus by examining the socio-political context of his life and ministry Sunday at Centenary United Methodist Church, 245 N. Fourth St. Sunday’s sermon is “Word, Wisdom, Worldview.” Worship starts at 10 a.m.

Clinton Parkway Assembly of God

Clinton Parkway Assembly of God, 3200 Clinton Parkway, will honor teachers Sunday for their faithfulness to God through their teaching. Children will receive their promotion certificates to enter the next class, beginning Sept. 5.

Missionettes and Royal Rangers will begin their fall classes at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Junior and senior high youth will begin a study on the Holy Spirit at the same time.

The God’s Kids children’s ministry will start its new series “Discovery Cove” Sept. 5.

First Christian Church

Sunday school will be at 10:10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. Sunday at First Christian Church, 1000 Ky. There will be a combined service at 11 a.m.

First Church of the Nazarene

“When you look at life, do you see a wheelbarrow or do you see a pony in there somewhere?” will be the theme of Sunday worship at First Church of the Nazarene, 1470 N. 1000 Road.

Children, kindergarten through sixth grade, are welcome to join the Children’s Cactus Club Sunday.

First Presbyterian Church

First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Parkway, continues its series about “Celebration Our Story,” by focusing on the church’s connection to Kansas University.

At the 8 a.m. Sunday service, the Rev. Ray Fancher will “interview” the Rev. Thad Holcombe, campus pastor of Ecumenical Christian Ministries, 1204 Oread Drive, and the Rev. Emilee Whitehurst, First Presbyterian’s associate pastor, about the church’s vision for university ministry.

During Sunday school hour, there will be a forum of students, faculty and campus pastors discussing campus ministry. The presentation, “Then and Now,” will focus on how the religious life of students has changed.

Kansas University Chancellor Robert Hemenway will deliver the sermon at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Sermon title: “Religion in Higher Education.”

First Regular Missionary Baptist Church

First Regular Missionary Baptist Church, 1646 Vt., will have a community benefit sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. The sale will include clothing, household items, books, baked goods, barbecue, a car wash and children’s activities. Proceeds from this event will benefit the homeless in Lawrence.

First Southern Baptist Church

First Southern Baptist Church, 4300 W. Sixth St., is welcoming back college students with its “Welcome Back Students Kick-off 2004-2005” at 9:15 a.m. Sunday.

There will be a continental breakfast, Bible study and worship. The College Leadership Team will conclude the morning by providing lunch to all participants.

First United Methodist Church

The Rev. Sharon Howell, senior pastor, returns Wednesday from three months of spiritual renewal leave at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

Howell took the leave, after more than 30 years of ministry, to have time for reflection, reading and writing.

Congregation will welcome back Howell at the regularly scheduled worship services Sept. 5. Howell will preach on “The Table of Grace” as the congregation celebrates Communion.

Morning Star Christian Church

Morning Star Christian Church, 998 N. 1771 Road, will have a washers tournament party at 6 p.m. Sept. 10. Washers is similar to horseshoes and is played with two-person teams. Teams may register by calling the church at 749-0023. Cost is $10 per team, and there will be a contest for the best-designed washers.

Ninth Street Baptist Church

Deaconess and Ministers’ Wives Annual Prayer Breakfast will be from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. today at Ninth Street Baptist Church, 847 Ohio.

Speaker will be Diana Brown, wife of the Rev. Renee Brown, Ninth Street’s pastor. The theme: “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made — Worthy and Useable Through Christ.”

Plymouth Congregational Church

Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt., will have “Start-Up Sunday” this weekend. Junior high school summer Sunday school class will perform a puppet presentation during the 9:30 a.m. traditional service. Plymouth Ringers will also perform.

Hands-on Sunday school program starts this year with the “Dig into the Bible” rotation this weekend. All children’s choirs will meet during the Sunday school hour.

Programs begin Sunday for junior high and senior high school youth, including confirmation class. Youth and parents will gather from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the church for a potluck dinner and informational meetings about Sunday school classes and fellowship events for the rest of the year.

Mission and Service Board will have a mission fair, between Sunday services, in the Mayflower Room. The fair will celebrate the spirit of volunteerism and demonstrate Plymouth’s compassion for the Lawrence community.

St. James AME Church

St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church, Seventh and Maple streets, will have its daylong appreciation services for the Rev. Gregory Gray and his wife, Cynthia Gray, Sunday.

The 11 a.m. service will pay tribute to the couple, who have led the church for the past four years. Cynthia Gray is president of the Pearl S. Gray Women’s Missionary Society.

There will be a 3:30 p.m. Sunday service featuring the Rev. Edward Walzer and the choir of the New Bethel AME Church of Kansas City, Kan.

The Lawrence Mass Choir and invited guest soloists will also participate in the afternoon program.

Trinity Episcopal Church

The Rev. Jonathon Jensen will preach and celebrate at the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday services at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt.

Soloist for the 10:30 a.m. service will be soprano Kristi Willhite, a member of the church’s adult choir.

There will be Eucharist with unction at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel, 1027 Vt. The Rev. John Nixon will celebrate.

Rehearsals for the Trinity adult choir, under the direction of James Ralston, will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday in the parish hall.

Trinity Lutheran Church

Music ensembles begin rehearsals at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H., with a variety of opportunities.

There are choirs for all ages.

Beginning rehearsals Tuesday are the children’s choir for second through sixth grade at 5 p.m. in the music room; handbell choir at 6 p.m. in the sanctuary; and the Trinity choir at 7:30 p.m. in the music room.

The Matins Choir, which sings at the 8:30 a.m. Sunday services on the first and third Sundays of each month and rehearses at 7:25 a.m. those Sundays, resumes Sept. 19.

Girls choirs for seventh through 12th grades and instrumentalists will rehearse as needed for scheduled participation in worship.

West Side Presbyterian Church

The Rev. Bill Woodard, the new pastor of West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive, will preach at the 11 a.m. Sunday service.

Service will be preceded by church school at 9:30 a.m. and fellowship at 10:30 a.m.

Children’s choir, adult bell choir and choir will rehearse Wednesday.
