Students say stranger offered money, drugs

An unidentified man has been hanging out in the parking lot of Lawrence Alternative High School offering young women money and drugs to hang out with him, police said Friday.

The most recent incident happened about 8 a.m. Thursday as a 17-year-old girl was arriving at the school, at 2600 W. 25th St. She told school officials, who reported it to police.

Upon investigation, officers found that several female students had reported similar incidents in recent days.

The man was described as a heavyset black male in his 30s in a maroon four-door Buick with a Kansas State University tag on the front.

Police asked anyone with information to call the Crime Stoppers hot line at 843-TIPS.

Mary’s Lake reopens; fish kill still a mystery

Mary’s Lake was reopened to fishing Friday after being closed since Monday because of a mysterious fish kill.

The lake, in Prairie Park at 2811 Kensington Road, has been aerated all week to add oxygen to the water.

More than 200 fish died in the lake when oxygen levels plummeted, parks officials said this week. Parks and Recreation personnel late last week noticed the dead fish and called in a fisheries biologist from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks to help find the cause. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment also conducted an investigation. Neither agency was able to determine the exact cause of the fish kill.

On Wednesday, officials said it appeared the cause was natural, and that no environmental damage was suspected.

For more information, contact the parks department at 832-3458.
