Ethics officials to revamp rules on campaign contributions

? Kansas ethics officials today said they would work on proposed legislation to increase disclosure of campaign contributions in state races.

Under current law, campaign finance statements report contributions and expenditures made 11 days before Election Day.

That means voters don’t know what special interests are spending in the final days of the campaign.

During the Aug. 3 Republican Party primary, state officials said they received numerous complaints about big expenditures by nearly unknown groups that were made in the last days of legislative races.

Members of the Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission said they might consider ways of requiring the reporting of campaign contributions right up until the election.

And some officials suggested they would consider proposals to require certain groups to report their finances that aren’t currently required to report that information.

The commission said it may have a proposal for the Legislature by December.
