Dick D. ‘Sandy’ Sanders

Services for Dick D. “Sandy” Sanders, 60, of rural Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lawrence Funeral Chapel. Burial with American Legion honors will be at Stull Cemetery.

Mr. Sanders died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at his home after an extended illness.

He was born Feb. 11, 1944, in Leavenworth, the son of Walter and Lena Blanchard Sanders. He had lived in Lawrence for 16 years.

Mr. Sanders had worked as an equipment manager for CAS Construction Co. since 1992. He formerly worked for Martin Tractor Co. and for W.A. Dunbar and Sons.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of the American Legion Bicentennial Post No. 225 in Ozawkie. He also was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 309 in Lawrence. He was active in the Eagles Golf Assn.

Mr. Sanders was a graduate of Independence (Kan.) High School and attended Pittsburg State University.

He married Bertha Sawyers on July 20, 1984, in Miami, Okla. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include his mother, Independence, Kan.; two daughters, Christy Stegman, Topeka, and Deborah Sanders, Champaign, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Shelley Wolfhope, Austin, Texas; two stepsons, Greg Woelk, Topeka, and Mark Woelk, Lawrence; two sisters, Mary Passauer and Judy Quigley, both of Independence; and five grandchildren.

A daughter, Marsha Sanders, died earlier.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society, sent in care of the chapel.
