FSHS finishes fourth at first tennis tourney

? Led by solid play from Tess Owen and Julia Guard, the Free State High girls tennis team placed fourth at the season-opening Shawnee Heights doubles tournament Saturday.

Guard and Owen went 4-1 and finished second at No. 4 doubles. Andrea Koch and Jamie McGovern went 2-3 and placed fourth in No. 1 doubles.

Free State’s No. 2 doubles team of Bridget Lavaveshkul and Meghan Bock, as well as Joanna Loewen and Leigh Luina at No. 3 doubles, contributed to a 4-0 victory over Topeka West.

The Firebirds won’t compete again until Sept. 2, when they travel to Junction City.
