Guillen suspended for two more games

Chicago — White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was suspended for two more games and fined $2,000 by the commissioner’s office Thursday for calling umpire Hunter Wendelstedt a liar.

Guillen originally was suspended two games and fined $1,000 for arguing during an Aug. 9 game against Cleveland. The manager was ejected after the first inning for arguing with Wendelstedt after Carlos Lee was called out trying to steal second base.

Guillen finished serving that suspension Wednesday night, missing his second consecutive game against Detroit. But before Wednesday’s game, he told reporters he had a problem with some aspects of Wendelstedt’s report to the commissioner’s office.

“I don’t blame them to suspend me or whatever it is, but the guy lied. Whatever his name is, Hunter or whatever. He lied. He lied to major league baseball, he lied to Mr. (Bob) Watson, he lied to Mr. Sandy Alderson,” Guillen said.

City orders inspections for Wrigley Field

Chicago — City officials ordered a new round of inspections at Wrigley Field on Thursday and threatened to block Monday night’s game if the team couldn’t prove the ballpark was safe.

Buildings Commissioner Stan Kaderbek said he ordered the review after a reporter noted during an interview Wednesday that repairs at the ballpark were “shoddy.”

Chunks of concrete have fallen from Wrigley Field’s upper deck on at least three occasions since June, forcing stadium officials to install nets to protect Cubs fans and to conduct full inspections of the upper deck and mezzanine levels in July.

Kaderbek said the Cubs had until noon Monday to show that 90-year-old Wrigley was safe.

Twins’ outfielder Hunter injures neck in crash

Minneapolis — Twins center fielder Torii Hunter strained his neck when he crashed into the padded wall trying to make a catch, and left Thursday night’s game against the New York Yankees.

The three-time Gold Glove winner sprinted into right-center, chasing a drive by Jorge Posada. Hunter appeared to reach it, but collided violently with the padding, and the ball fell between his legs for a double. Hunter lay on his back on the warning track for several minutes before being helped to his feet and carted off the field. He was listed as day-to-day.

Mets’ McEwing hurt

Denver — The New York Mets lost yet another player to injury Thursday night when second baseman Joe McEwing was hurt in the second game of a doubleheader against the Colorado Rockies. McEwing was injured when Colorado’s J.D. Closser slid hard into second trying to break up a double play in the sixth inning. McEwing stayed on the field clutching his left leg and remained there for several minutes before being helped off by New York’s trainers.

Mets put Zambrano on disabled list

Denver — The New York Mets placed right-hander Victor Zambrano on the 15-day disabled list because of elbow tendinitis Thursday and called up right-hander Bartolome Fortunato. Zambrano was sent back to New York after having his elbow tighten up in the second inning Tuesday against Colorado. Test results showed flexor tendinitis, a similar problem to what Zambrano had before he was traded from Tampa Bay on July 30.

Zambrano won his first two starts for New York, allowing four earned runs over 14 innings, before leaving in the second inning Tuesday against the Rockies.
