Raiders’ bats hot in Omaha
Pitching Lawrence's downfall at regional
Booming bats weren’t enough for the Lawrence Raiders.
Despite posting a .379 team batting average and a .540 slugging mark, the Raiders were eliminated from the Legion Central Plains Regional in Omaha, Neb.
The Raiders opened with a 7-2 triumph over host Omaha, Neb., Post One, then dropped heart-breaking, one-run decisions to Eden Prairie, Minn., (15-14) and Johnson County, Iowa, (12-11) in the double-elimination tourney.
Outfielder-pitcher Jake Hoover, now a senior at Free State High, paced the Raiders’ lusty attack by going 10-for-14 and a team-high six RBI. Hoover, who collected eight singles, a double and a triple, batted .714 with a slugging percentage of .929.
Outfielder Ryan Engel batting .471 (8-of-17). First baseman Chris Coleman and outfielder Taylor Martin posted .429 batting averages (6-of-14). Martin had the Raiders’ only homer, a solo shot in the first game.
Brett Lisher, another outfielder, batted .417 (5-of-12) with a double and three triples. His slugging percentage was 1.000.
Meanwhile, opposing teams batted .361 against the Raiders.
After Tyson Corley’s eight-hit performance in the first game, Lawrence’s pitchers were roughed up. The Raiders, who won their second straight Legion AAA championship two weeks ago in Chanute, had a team earned run average of 8.31 in Omaha.
