Eugene W. Haley

Services for Eugene W. Haley, 75, Lawrence, will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church. Burial with military honors will follow at Underwood Cemetery in Jefferson County.

Mr. Haley died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Jan. 29, 1929, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Ernest and Nellie Royer Haley. He had lived in Lawrence since 1948.

Mr. Haley was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and also was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force Reserves. He graduated in 1952 from Kansas University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in business administration. Two years later he received his master’s in business administration.

He was a real estate developer in Douglas County and was president of Holmes, Peck and Brown Real Estate for more than 35 years. He was involved in the ownership and management of farmland in Douglas and surrounding counties. He won several soil conservation awards through the Kansas Banker’s Assn. in Douglas and Jefferson counties.

Mr. Haley was a member of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14, Lawrence Masonic Lodge No. 6, Lawrence Scottish Rite bodies and Lawrence Country Club.

He married Betty Jo Hunter on Sept. 5, 1949, in Kansas City, Mo. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, Jo Lynn Haley, Chicago; a son, Michael W., Osage City; and four grandchildren.

The family will greet friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church Building Fund or to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, sent in care of the mortuary.
