Wildcats counting on Basanez’s return to form

Brett Basanez was the best freshman quarterback in the country in 2002.

Last season was a different story for Northwestern’s offensive leader.

With receivers Mark Philmore and Ashton Aikens sidelined by injuries and defenses determined to stop him, Basanez slumped to 1,916 yards passing with four touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Now coach Randy Walker thinks his quarterback is ready to return to form.

“I’m really impressed with the way he has taken on the challenge of 2003 and become a better football player,” Walker said. “I think we’re going to see a lot different guy in the future. I believe he’s going to have a great season next year. I really respect the way he’s responded since last year. He didn’t complain or whine; he went to work, both in the weight room and with his film study. He’s spent more time than anybody getting stronger and becoming a more intelligent quarterback.”

Basanez will have plenty of weapons at his disposal. Aikens and Philmore are both expected to return to the lineup, and all five of the Wildcats’ starters return on the offensive line.

The biggest question for Northwestern’s offense will be if senior Noah Herron — who rushed for 739 yards as a backup last season — can replace standout tailback Jason Wright.

More questions lurk on defense.

Northwestern returns nine starters, but the Wildcats allowed 25.1 points per game last season and ranked 88th in the nation in total defense (417.3 yards per game).

Northwestern defeated Kansas 28-20 in a rain-soaked season opener in 2003 at Lawrence before losing four of its next five. The Wildcats, who had losing seasons in five of the previous six years, won four of their final six regular-season games and were the eighth Big Ten team to gain a bowl bid. Bowling Green handed them a 28-24 loss in the Motor City Bowl.

The Wildcats will face Conference USA favorite Texas Christian on the road in their season opener before playing host to Arizona State and Kansas.
