Blessed Hope Baptist Church

The community is invited to attend the grand-opening services of Blessed Hope Baptist Church.

Services will be at 10:45 a.m. Sunday at Sunset Hill School, 901 Schwarz Road. Lunch will be after the service. There also will be a musical presentation.

Clinton Parkway Assembly of God

Men's ministry of Clinton Parkway Assembly of God, 3200 Clinton Parkway, will have its monthly meeting at 8 a.m. Aug. 21. Participants will have breakfast and then continue the "Wild at Heart" study.

Worship Involving the Severely Handicapped will be at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 21 at the church.

Special guest at the 9 a.m. Aug. 22 service will be the Rev. Tom Bevard with Prison Ministries.

God's Kids Ministry will begin a new series, "Treasure Cove," at 9 a.m. Aug. 22.

First Christian Church

Eddy Bazin will be the special guest at the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday services at First Christian Church, 1000 Ky. He is pastor at a church in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and has established a school there.

The clown ministry will have a garage sale from 7 a.m. to noon today in the church's fellowship hall.

First Regular Missionary Baptist Church

First Regular Missionary Baptist Church, 1646 Vt., will have a community benefit sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 28 at the church.

The sale will include clothing, household items, books, baked goods, barbecue, car wash and children's activities.

First United Methodist Church

A new Sunday school rotation begins this weekend for children in first through sixth grades at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

This six-week study, "Psalms & Songs," will provide children an opportunity to experience Psalms as songs and poems; discover that the Psalms were written to express a wide range of emotions, from praising God to lamenting bad situations; understand it is OK to express joy and anger with God; memorize certain verses of the Psalms; and explore the Psalms through their senses.

Sunday school is from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Immanuel Lutheran Church & University Student Center

Immanuel Lutheran Church & University Student Center, 15th and Iowa streets, and Lutheran Student Fellowship, will have a barbecue at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 21.

Students who attend Kansas University, Baker University and Haskell Indian Nations University are welcome to attend this free event, which will feature a concert by The Billions.

Rally Day will be at 9:45 a.m. Aug. 22, between services at the church. This is an opportunity for children to become acquainted with their Sunday school teachers and classrooms.

Lawrence Community Mass Choir

The Lawrence Community Mass Choir rehearses every second and fourth Monday at 7 p.m. at Victory Bible Church, 1942 Mass.

Those who are interested are welcome to participate in praising God with gospel music.

Martha and Mary's Way

Martha and Mary's Way, an interfaith ministry to women, will have a fall program kickoff party from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Walkabout, a country property 15 miles southwest of Lawrence.

The labyrinth will be available for walking meditations.

The free event will feature a community barbecue. Participants are encouraged to bring a side dish to share.

Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship

A "Covenant Back-to-School Cookout" will be for college students and working adults ages 18 to 26 at 6 p.m. Aug. 21 at the home of Steve and Jane Butler, 1932 Pebble Beach Court. For details, call Steve or Jane at 842-6606.

A women's retreat will be Sept. 17-18 at Horsecreek Ranch. Cost: $65 per person. Speaker will be Sally McClung. A $25 deposit is requested.

St. James AME Church

There will be a fish-fry fund-raiser from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church, Seventh and Maple streets. Meal will feature a fish fillet, spaghetti, coleslaw and a dessert. Dinners will cost $7. Meals will be available for dine-in, carryout and delivery.

Pastor and First Lady Appreciation Day will be Aug. 29. The 11 a.m. worship service will pay tribute to first lady Cynthia Gray, president of the Pearl S. Gray Women's Missionary Society.

The 3:30 p.m. worship service that day will celebrate four years of ministry by the Rev. Gregory R. Gray, pastor of St. James. The Rev. Edward Walzer of New Bethel AME Church of Kansas City, Kan., will bring the message.

St. Margaret's Episcopal Church

Special clips from the movies "Contact" and "Simon Birch" will accompany the Rev. Darrel Proffitt's sermons at the 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sunday services at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St.

The vestry and staff of St. Margaret's will attend the Willow Creek Leadership Conference in the Kansas City area.

Lector and chalice bearer training sessions will be Sunday.

Trinity Episcopal Church

Adult forum at 9:30 a.m. Sunday will be a video presentation (part two of "Testament: The Bible in History, Mightier Than the Sword") led by deacon Dick Tracy at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt.

Deacon Rita Tracy will preach at both Sunday services. Soloist at the 10:30 a.m. service will be soprano Alison Atkins. She will sing "The Bird's Song" by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Acolytes and children ages 9 to 18 interested in being acolytes will meet after the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service.

Vestry will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the parish hall.

Diocesan Task Force on College Ministry will meet Thursday at the church.

Trinity Lutheran Church

"Sundaes on Sunday," a fellowship time focusing on gifts and talents offered to God, will be at 9:45 a.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H.

The event, sponsored by the church's stewardship committee, will have stations with various ice-cream toppings in the fellowship hall. There also will be information about how these "toppings" (gifts) can be shared with the church, the community and the world.

Social concerns team will meet at noon Sunday for lunch and discussion of ministry opportunities for the fall.

The confirmation program "Faith Inkubators" starts at 4 p.m. Sunday with a meeting of the adult guides in the youth room. Parents and youth will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday for an introduction to the program, which is led by the Rev. Gary Teske, lead pastor; and Adam Boxberger and D.J. Whetter, youth/young adult directors.

Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America will meet for Bible studies Wednesday in the social room, Ruth Group at 9:30 a.m., Naomi Group at 1:30 p.m. and Deborah Group at 7:30 p.m.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

There will be a fellowship walk/brunch at 8:30 a.m. Sunday starting at the Kansas River bridges.

All-Fellowship Work Day and Picnic will be from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 5 at the fellowship, 1263 N. 1100 Road.

West Side Presbyterian Church

The Rev. Bill Woodard will deliver the sermon at the 11 a.m. Sunday worship service at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive. Woodard, the church's new pastor, started his ministry Aug. 1 at West Side.

The mission and stewardship committee will meet at noon Sunday.

Women's Assn. coordinating committee will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Ice cream social to welcome Woodard and his wife, Claudia, is planned for 4 p.m. Aug. 22 at the church.
