Football doctors surface

The names of other former Kansas University football players who became doctors have surfaced since Friday’s Journal-World article about KU football player Matt Thompson.

Greg Ballard, a Lawrence High product who lettered in 1993 as a wide receiver, is an orthopedic surgeon in his fifth year of residency in Wichita.

Russ Bowen (offensive lineman, 1988-91) is a family practice doctor in Omaha, Neb. John Wertzberger (offensive lineman from Lawrence, 1956-58) is a retired orthopedic surgeon.

Justin Antisdel (place-kicker, 1996-97) is a head and neck surgeon in St. Louis. Scott Smetana (running back, 1991-1995) is in residency in the Denver area.
