Sales tax collections up in Lawrence, county
Lawrence and Douglas County posted increases in sales tax collections during July, according to data from the Kansas Department of Revenue.
Douglas County collected $1.06 million during the month, up 13.3 percent from the same period a year ago. Lawrence collections rose to $955,011, up 13.2 percent from a year ago.
Sales tax collections generally are considered the best indication of retail sales activity in the area. Due to the state’s reporting system, sales taxes tallied in July represent sales made between two and three months earlier.
Area cities sales tax collections compared to a year ago:
- Ottawa, up 10.9 percent, $111,269.
- Overland Park, up 17.6 percent, $3.17 million.
- Topeka, up 11.2 percent, $1.99 million.
- Olathe, down 7.6 percent, $1.73 million.
