Carbondale urged to boil water before using

A “boil water advisory” remains in effect for the city of Carbondale, but water restrictions have been lifted for commercial, industrial and agricultural uses.

The advisory was issued Aug. 4 by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment because Carbondale’s water treatment plant had a mechanical failure.

Carbondale is in Osage County, about 16 miles south of Topeka.

The boil advisory will likely remain in effect for several more days as repairs to the plant are made, department officials said.

Medical offices hit in overnight burglaries

Three medical offices were broken into late Tuesday or early Wednesday, including the business office for Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

At the hospital, 325 Maine, the dollar amount of property damaged was higher than the value of items stolen, officials said. But a list of what was taken wasn’t available Wednesday.

At Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, 346 Maine, someone caused $450 damage to a door and took $300 cash. The office of Robert Jacobs DDS, at the same address, also was broken into but was missing only $3 cash, police said.

Sgt. Dan Ward, a Lawrence Police spokesman, said police were investigating but have not identified a suspect. He said police didn’t have enough evidence to officially say the burglaries were related.

Anyone with information about the burglaries is asked to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 843-TIPS.
