39 ideas on what to wear back to school

Journal-World Teen Advisory Board members gathered Saturday to talk about what they’d be wearing to school this fall. They accumulated 39 ideas for back-to-school shoppers, but here are two thoughts to keep in mind:

What follows are some fun things to add to your wardrobe if you’re getting bored with what you have, but this isn’t a “taste test”: You don’t need to follow trends to fit in at school.

Also, if you do find a poncho sweater or special jean jacket that you like, don’t buy the first one you see. Visit the downtown Lawrence retailers, the discount stores, even area thrift shops. You’ll find a better price if you’re patient about looking around.

1. Pairing hot pink with black or khaki

2. Scarves as belts

3. Cami tops while it’s still warm — cotton, or lingerie fabrics like silk if you’re wearing something over it

Lawrence High School junior Laura Parkinson models her own jean jacket, roped pearl necklace, short pleated skirt and flip-flops. She has a comfortable blouse on underneath in case it's still 99 degrees when school starts.

5. Chandelier earrings

6. Dark-wash denim

Camisole tops are featured on sisters Nicolette Weil, left, Lawrence High School graduate, and Maya Weil, who completed ninth grade at Central Junior High School. Maya will be attending high school out of state in 2004-2005. Casual or floral cotton styles are popular, but if you wear the silky, lingerie-style fabric instead, a sweater or coverup is a good idea.

35. Cowl-neck sweaters

And for the guys (you have it so easy):
