To-do list

Evanescence at Verizon

Evanescence has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a no-name act in Arkansas to selling more than 10 million albums and winning a Grammy. And it really only took two years.

The ride has not been without its bumps. Co-founder Ben Moody left the goth-pop group abruptly, but singer Amy Lee will return with a new, expanded lineup this time around.

The band will be joined by Seether, 3 Days Grace and Breaking Benjamin at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Bonner Springs.

Arts

‘Vacillations of the Art’ to open at Olive Gallery

The Olive Gallery, 15 E. Eighth St., will show the work of painter Anthony Pontius and collaborator Jenn Dierdorf beginning Saturday and continuing through Aug. 31.

An opening reception will be from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, featuring the band Drakkar Sauna and the artwork of Willie Jordan in the gallery’s Kid’s Corner.

Most of the pieces in the show are collaborative, with Pontius’ paintings incorporating collage elements by Dierdorf. The works showcase the duo’s penchant for creating nonsensical and dreamlike environments that exist in rational settings. Imitation Polaroids also are prominently featured in the show.

Primary

Head to the ballot box

Civic duty calls Tuesday for up to 55,789 Douglas County residents.

Those registered voters — 20,072 Republicans, 17,042 Democrats and 18,675 independents — are eligible to vote in primary elections for federal, state and area offices.

Polls in the county’s 67 precincts will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Independents are eligible to vote either in Democratic or Republican primaries. Independents may vote in Democratic primaries simply by picking up a ballot at the polls; independents seeking to vote in Republican contests must fill out a form declaring a willingness to become a Republican.

Newly declared Republicans can switch back to independent status by returning to the county clerk’s office and filling out another form.

Schools

10K supports LHS, FSHS running programs

The third-annual Cross Town Unity 10K run will be Saturday. The start will be 8 a.m. at Free State High School, 4700 Overland Drive, and will finish at Lawrence High School, 1901 La.

A one-mile fun run/walk will start at 9:30 a.m. at Lawrence High School.

The event raises money for cross country and track programs at both high schools. For more information go to www.unityrun.com.
