In others’ words
The following editorial appeared in the Wichita Eagle on Friday, July 30:
State Sen. Susan Wagle, R-Wichita, sent out a mailer claiming that “some Kansas professors are using your tax money to turn their classrooms into red light districts.” She also sent a fund-raising letter claiming that “a Kansas university was spending tens of thousands of tax dollars” to purchase explicit films.
Not true. The University of Kansas determined that the materials used in its human-sexuality class were not obscene (that’s why the law she helped pass about the use of sexually explicit materials has had zero impact on the course). And the materials did not cost tens of thousands of dollars. Not even close.
But what else is new? Since she first grandstanded about the KU class on the floor of the Senate — rather than approach KU or at least hold a committee hearing — Ms. Wagle has preferred sensationalism to substance.
