Silent supporters

To the editor:

Since the smoking ban went into effect, I have tried to express my appreciation for the clean air in the establishments I patronize which are now smoke free. Recently after drinking beer and dining, I told my waiter I really liked the clean air. He replied “So do I.” On the way out I told the individuals who were responsible for seating patrons the same thing, adding, “Tell your boss.” One replied, “I will.” But my friend was right behind me and he overheard one say to the other, “I’m not going to say anything. I don’t want to be fired.”

The point of this is that we have been told by the bar and restaurant owners that their employees do not have any feelings supporting the smoking ban. This is simply not true. They need their jobs, even if they are concerned for their health and appreciate the clean air.
