Raiders win; Outlaws eliminated

? Chris Coleman stroked five hits, Tyson Corley and Brett Lisher rapped four hits apiece and Taylor Martin slugged two home runs as Lawrence’s Raiders crushed Pittsburg, 19-11, in the winners’ bracket of the AAA state American Legion baseball tournament Sunday evening.

The Raiders slammed 25 hits off four Pittsburg pitchers, including starter Mark Smith, who had played in the Kansas Shrine Bowl on Saturday night in Emporia.

Earlier, Coy Cooper belted a grand slam and drove in six runs to lead the Lawrence Outlaws run-ruled Arkansas City, 12-2, Sunday afternoon in the losers bracket of the State AAA Legion baseball tournament.

Cooper, the Outlaws’ third baseman, hit the grand slam in the sixth inning. He also drove in runs with a sacrifice fly and by drawing a bases-loaded walk.

Outlaws’ centerfielder Mitch McPherson led off with a home run and added a pair of singles. Winning pitcher Rod Evinger, who scattered four hits, also doubled twice and drove in a pair of runs.

Ark City pitchers surrendered nine hits and nine walks to the Outlaws who were to meet Chanute in Sunday’s late game. Chanute outlasted Hays, 14-13, in Sunday afternoon’s other elimination game.
