May to miss start against Yankees

? Darrell May will miss his scheduled Saturday start against the New York Yankees after experiencing discomfort in his left leg during a throwing session.

May left his previous start, on Saturday against the Minnesota Twins, because of discomfort in his left adductor muscle in the groin area. He’s 0-3 with a 7.32 ERA this season.

“It feels better, but I still felt a slight something in there toward the end,” May said after Thursday’s throwing session. “I probably could pitch, but it probably wouldn’t be the smartest thing to do. It’s frustrating.”

May, 10-8 with a 3.77 ERA in 2003, will throw another bullpen session Saturday in New York. If that goes well, he could start next week during Kansas City’s three-game series at Toronto.

“I don’t know when I’ll pitch again, I just know it’s not going to be Saturday,” May said.

May is hoping to avoid being placed on the disabled list.

“I’m keeping my fingers crossed that won’t happen,” he said. “I’ve been there, don’t want to do that again.”

Manager Tony Pena said the Royals had yet to determine who would start Saturday against the Yankees. Candidates from the minors include right-handers Jamey Wright and Kris Wilson from Triple-A Omaha, and right-hander Eduardo Villacis from Double-A Wichita.

The Royals have no plans to bring up their top prospect, 20-year-old Zack Greinke, who went 15-4 with a 1.93 ERA last year in the minors.
