Highlights from the Kansas Legislature

Highlights of Thursday’s activities at the Kansas Legislature:

  • By a large margin, the Senate rejected legislation to expand gambling, and some legislators they doubt the issue will come up again this year.
  • Negotiators agreed that a proposed amendment to the Kansas Constitution banning gay marriage should also deny legal recognition to other same-sex arrangements.
  • The Senate defeated an attempt to allow Sunday liquor sales statewide, but the issue could be resurrected before legislators adjourn for the year.
  • Qualified illegal immigrants would receive a one-year break on tuition at Kansas’ public colleges and universities under a proposal approved by the House.
  • The House sustained Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ veto of a bill permitting Kansans to carry concealed handguns.

Also:

  • Legislators honored veteran Kansas City Star reporter John Petterson for his 37 years covering state government and politics.
  • Senators paid tribute to the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark Brown v. Board of Education school desegregation ruling, which has its 50th anniversary on May 17.
  • Local civil rights activists held an afternoon concert in the Statehouse rotunda honoring the service of U.S. troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Clock is ticking:

Thursday was the second day of the wrap-up session and the 80th day of the session overall, out of 90 scheduled.
