Concealed guns bill vetoed

? The Kansas House today failed to override Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ veto of a bill that would have allowed Kansans to carry concealed handguns.

A sponsor of the bill, Rep. Gary Hayzlett, R-Lakin, urged his colleagues to overturn the veto, which would have required a two-thirds vote, or 84 members in the 150-member House.

“Vote for those honest citizens out there in the state of Kansas,” Hayzlett said.

But the measure received 77 votes to override and 47 against.

Sebelius vetoed the bill earlier this month saying it would have been a danger to law enforcement officers who would have had to assume that every person they stopped was armed.

The bill would have required the attorney general’s office to issue a concealed-carry permit to any Kansan 21 or older who is a U.S. citizen, pays a $150 application fee, has no mental illness or drug or alcohol addiction and completes eight hours of training.
