High winds expected today

Tie down that patio furniture and hold on to the wheel when you’re driving — strong winds will gust today throughout Kansas.

“There’s a wind advisory from 10 this morning to 10 this evening,” said Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist. “No matter where you’re at, you’re going to experience the wind speeds.”

South winds will blow in the 25- to 35-mph range, with frequent gusts up to 45 mph expected by afternoon.

“Everybdy will be seeing rough driving on an east-to-west highway,” Sayers said.

The strong winds have led the National Weather Service to put the fire danger warning into the “extreme” category.

The south winds will warm up the Lawrence area today.

“Don’t worry about that jacket this morning, we’re already in the 60s,” Sayers said.

Today’s high will reach 85, under sunny skies, he said.

The overnight low will drop to 62 by early Thursday morning, with increasing clouds.

Thursday’s forecast calls for a high of 74, with a slight chance of thunderstorms in the morning, increasing in the afternoon, Sayers said.

The chance for scattered thunderstorms continues to increase to 40 percent by Thursday night into Friday morning. Friday’s morning low will be 51.

Clouds will linger on Saturday, with the morning low starting off at 45 and the high reaching 64.

Sunday’s forecast calls for a little below normal temperatures, with the low starting out at 39, and the high reaching 69.
