Calvary Temple Assembly of God

The last gate in the “Twelve Gate Series” will be presented at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace.

Services will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer request at the altar. All teenage classes will attend this part of the evening service.

First Baptist Church

The public is welcome to attend “Children’s Sunday” this weekend at First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Drive.

Children of the church will lead the 10:45 a.m. Sunday service. They will perform a sermon in music called “It’s OK to be Different.”

The 8:30 a.m. Sunday service will be led by Alec Miller, a student from Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Kan.

A luncheon benefiting the summer youth trip to Estes Park, Colo., follows the second service. The church’s quarterly business meeting will be at approximately 1 p.m. Sunday in the Roger Williams Room.

First Christian Church

In celebration of “The Week of the Child,” the children of First Christian Church, 1000 Ky., will be host to the 11 a.m. Sunday contemporary service.

Greetings and announcements will be provided by Lance Beeman and Michael Penny. Kristen Chisham will be directing the pre-kindergarten/kindergarten class in singing. The First Christian Church children’s choir, directed by Becca Garrett, will perform.

Lindsey Beeman, Nicolas Lutz and Jessica Schwartz will follow with the call to Communion. The Scripture will be read by Shelby Baker. Dylan Lathrom and Amber Criss will speak on the message “Called to Serve.” Tori Henderson and the Rev. Randy Beeman will offer the invitation. There will also be a sixth-grade recognition presented by Muriel Cook.

The 9 a.m. traditional Sunday service will include the First Christian Church children’s choir and the sixth-grade recognition.

Adult Sunday school classes are at 10:10 a.m.

First Presbyterian Church

Presbyterian Women will have its spring Presbyterian workshop at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Parkway.

All Presbyterian women are invited to this meeting, which is being hosted in Lawrence this year. Coffee and registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The meeting begins at 9:30 a.m.

First United Methodist Church

First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt., will have its annual All-Church Birthday Party from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday in Brady Hall. Event will feature food, a moonwalk, games and prizes.

“Road to Emmaus” is the new children’s Sunday school rotation, which begins Sunday. Children will have the opportunity the next six weeks to study the events of Holy Week, explore the story of the walk to Emmaus, think about ways we “meet” Jesus today and consider how we can share the joy of Jesus’ Resurrection with others.

United Methodist Men’s dinner meeting will be Wednesday in Brady Hall. Reservations can be made in the church’s gathering area.

Lawrence Wesleyan Church

Fourth-graders will have a bake sale between Sunday services at Lawrence Wesleyan Church, 3705 Clinton Parkway, to raise money to buy a goat through Heifer International. The organization helps place a variety of food-producing animals with families around the world.

Men are invited for dinner at 6 p.m. Sunday at the church. Guest speaker will be Jesse Hancock from the Wichita Police Department. He will speak about topics relevant to men, including marriage struggles, the impact of pornography and living out faith in the workplace. Event is free.

The Rev. Nate Rovenstine will continue the sermon series “Play to the Audience of One.” There will be baptismal celebrations at both Sunday services, 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.

Plymouth Congregational Church

Ninth-graders of Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt., will be confirmed during the 9:30 a.m. Sunday services at the church.

This is a special service in which confirmands share excerpts from their statements of faith with the congregation, confirm their faith and become full members of the church.

Breakfast will be served for the confirmands and their families at 8:15 a.m. Sunday in the Mayflower Room.

Plymouth Church bell choirs and the chapel choir will present a concert at 7 p.m. Sunday in the church sanctuary.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church

Celebrations for First Communion will be at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. today at St. John the Evangelist Church, 1234 Ky. There will be a regular 5:30 p.m. liturgy today.

High school seniors of the parish should have received notification of a scholarship and an invitation to a parish graduation celebration. Those who have not received scholarship information and invitation should notify the parish immediately at 843-0109.

Knights of Columbus No. 1372 will have breakfast available after all Sunday liturgies. Proceeds will benefit local seminarians and the Knights Scholarship.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

Youth groups meet at 11 a.m. today at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St., to build a fire ring.

Young people ages 7-17 will meet at 2 p.m. today at Royal Crest Lanes, 933 Iowa, as part of the “Time to Grow Process.”

Theme for Sunday is “How can God use my gifts, even when I don’t have a great track record?”

Children will be involved in a special drama project at the 9 a.m. Sunday service, and the Celebration Ringers and Singers will lead worship at the 10:45 a.m. service. Youth will have a special bonfire gathering after the 5:30 p.m. service.

Women’s coffee Bible study, with child care provided, meets from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday mornings.

Trinity Episcopal Church

Members of the Trinity Vestry and Search Committee will meet at 8 a.m. today in the parish hall of Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt. Luncheon will be provided.

Sunday’s adult forum is a continuation of the study of Peter and Paul. Led by Dick Tracy, deacon, the forum starts at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the parish hall.

Zane Wilemon leads the 7 p.m. Wednesday Bible study in the Youth Room. Participants are trying to read the Bible in one year.

Trinity Lutheran Church

Jere McElhaney, Douglas County Commissioner, will be the guest at the men’s fellowship breakfast at 8:30 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H. Doug Swenson and John Wilkinson are hosts.

The 50-member Bethany College symphonic band will perform in concert at 7 p.m. today in Trinity’s fellowship hall.

A new adult forum, “Inspiration for Witnessing,” starts at 9:45 a.m. Sunday in the social room. This initiative was adopted by the ELCA church-wide assembly last year, and includes Bible meditations to call the church to pray, prepare and renew evangelical leaders, teach discipleship and renew churches.

“Christianity and the Arts: A Creative Exploration,” continues from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, led by Michael Bauer, professor of organ and church music at Kansas University and minister of arts at Trinity.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

A spiritual celebration, “Imagination and Place,” will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road.

A musical program by Melanie Hadley, pianist, and Aleksandr Snytkin, violinist, will be presented from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

A wine-and-cheese tasting will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

Lawrence Coalition for Peace and Justice

The second annual Evening of the Arts for Peace will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Unity Church of Lawrence, Ninth Street and Madeline Lane.

The event will celebrate all aspects of peace, using poetry, storytelling, drama and music. Performers include: Lila (Janette Michaels, Clark Jamison and Alison Dishinger), New World Order Peace Choir, Lawrence Carter, Maria Anthony and Megan Hurt.

The Tom and Anne Moore Peace Prizes will be presented.

Unity Church of Lawrence

“Breath of Life,” a training workshop, will be from 9 a.m. to noon May 8 at Unity Church of Lawrence, Ninth Street and Madeline Lane.

Participants are advised to wear comfortable clothing and bring water to drink. Do not eat two hours before class.

Workshop will be about oxygenation and its importance to the body’s wellness, and hands-on training of deep-breathing exercises.

University Community of Christ

Spring cleaning and groundskeeping will be from 8 a.m. to noon today at University Community of Christ, 1900 University Drive.

Elder Steve Zahniser will deliver the sermon, “Do You Love Me?” during the 10 a.m. Sunday worship service. There will also be an ordination ceremony for Jeff Mercer, who has been called to serve as a priest. Evangelist Leon Curtis and Zahniser will perform the ordination.

A prayer service is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Theme for the service is “Hear My Voice.” Zahniser will preside over the service.

Victory Bible Church

Victory Bible Church, 1942 Mass., will have a “Gather, Worship and Prayer” service from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. May 6 in conjuction with the National Day of Prayer.

Millions of Americans will answer the call to prayer that day in special observances in public venues for the 53rd annual National Day of Prayer.

West Side Presbyterian Church

The annual potluck mission dinner will be after morning worship May 2 at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.

Guest speaker is the Rev. Jan Nolting-Carter, associate pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Topeka. She will speak on “The Medical Benevolence Foundation.” The talk will feature the work of First Presbyterian Church at Embangweni Hospital in Malawi, Africa.
