Club news

Town and Country Republican Women of Douglas County played host to the Kansas Federation of Republican Women Third District spring meeting April 17 in Baldwin. The third district includes Douglas, Wyandotte and Johnson counties. Charlene Bredemeier, third district director, conducted the business meeting. The guest speaker was June Cooper, Garnett, outgoing National Committee Woman of Kansas. Martha Parker, of the Town and Country club, gave the presentation “Sarah, Wife of An Abolitionist.”

The Town and Country club has received the Diamond Award from the National Federation of Republican Women and a Blue Ribbon Achievement Award from KFRW for its Caring for America Heritage project and for supporting Sen. Sam Brownback in a movement to establish a National Abolitionist Museum in Douglas County.

Club members will be volunteer participants in the Lawrence sesquicentennial celebration and Kansas Chautauqua events in June.

  • The Betty Washington Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution met April 17 at the Lawrence Public Library. There were 12 members present. Leann Johnson, a master gardener, gave a presentation about store-bought, ready-made bouquets. Stacy Cope was elected to represent the club at NSDAR Continental Congress in July in Washington, D.C. The club presented a flag Thursday to the Bishop Seabury School.

  • The Lawrence 299ers Duplicate Bridge Club met April 14. Five tables competed in a stratified game that used a Mitchell movement. Don Brennaman directed the game.

Playing North-South, Donna Munson and Pat Lombardi finished in first place in A. Harriet Olson and Linda Heavin finished second in A and first in B. Julie Ward and Ann Thompson were first in C.

Sitting East-West, Steve Rego and Jo Andersen swept first place in A, B and C. Don Daugherty and Harry Talley claimed second in A, B and C.

  • The Lawrence Duplicate Bridge Club met Monday. Nine tables competed in a stratified game that used a Mitchell movement. Virginia Seaver directed the game.

Competing North-South, Harry Shaffer and Terry Tolar finished first in A. Clyde Romer and Steve Phelps finished second in A and first in B. Russ LaForce and Ilse Steinhardt were third in A, second in B and first in C. Kent McCullough and Larry Bodle placed fourth in A.

Playing the East-West cards, John Hickey and Patt Radford took first place in A. Jerry Sloan and Julia Brooks were second in A. Lois Jones and Jeff Nash placed third in A. Paul Heitzman and Virginia Seaver were fourth in A. Madelyn Jenks and Phyllis Brownlee took first in B and C. Mike Blumenfeld and Cathy Blumenfeld were second in B.

  • University Bridge Club announces the winners of its April 17 game. Hosts were Alice Atkins, Florence McNicol and Marian Davis.

Blue winners were: Alice Akins, first; George Bocquin, second; Roy Cropp, third; Dale Kring, fourth; and Jean Khatib, fifth.

Pink winners were: Bette Lukens, first; Ailene Bocquin, second; Florence McNicoll, third; Gladys Dight, fourth; and Jane Golden, fifth.
