Marlins sweep Phillies again
Philadelphia ? The Philadelphia Phillies might have better luck against the Florida Marlins in a boxing ring. They haven’t had much success against them on the field.
Mike Lowell homered again and Mike Redmond also connected, helping Florida beat Philadelphia, 9-7, Thursday for another sweep of the Phillies in a game that featured a bench-clearing brawl.
Phillies catcher Todd Pratt and Marlins shortstop Alex Gonzalez were ejected for starting a melee in the second inning after Brett Myers threw a high and inside pitch to Gonzalez.
“You can’t take that. You do nothing, the next time he hits you,” Gonzalez said, adding that he wasn’t going to charge the mound.
Pratt said he just wanted to go out and talk to Myers.
“I had to defend myself as soon as he raised his hands,” Pratt said. “He underestimated me. I’m a big guy, but I can box. I grew up in a rough neighborhood.”
Lowell, who homered three times in Florida’s 8-7, 12-inning win Wednesday night, struck out his first three at-bats, but hit a two-run shot off Rheal Cormier in the ninth.
The World Series champion Marlins held on for their third straight three-game sweep over Philadelphia. The Phillies scored twice in the ninth before Armando Benitez struck out Jim Thome, who homered earlier, with two on to end it.
Diamondbacks 11, Brewers 9, 15 innings
Milwaukee — Danny Bautista homered twice and singled home the go-ahead run in the game that took 5 hours, 22 minutes — the longest in the majors this season. Bautista set career highs with five hits and five RBIs. He extended his hitting streak to 14 games.
Reds 5, Braves 3, 5 innings
Cincinnati — Ken Griffey Jr. hit a two-run single and the Reds took advantage of Jaret Wright’s wildness to beat Atlanta in a rain-shortened game. Wright (1-1) sat out a one-hour rain delay before the first pitch, then lasted only 43 minutes.
Padres 9, Giants 4
San Francisco — Phil Nevin hit a two-run homer, and San Diego’s Ismael Valdez (2-0) pitched 52/3 strong innings on a day Giants slugger Barry Bonds was held out of the lineup to rest. San Diego took three out of four from the Giants, pounding out 52 hits — 12 Thursday, a season-high 17 Wednesday, and 15 Tuesday.
Mets 3, Expos 2
New York — Steve Trachsel and two relievers combined on a five-hitter, and Mike Piazza hit a go-ahead double for the Mets. Down to their final out, the Expos caught a break when left fielder Shane Spencer dropped Brian Schneider’s fly ball, scoring a run. But Braden Looper got pinch-hitter Jamey Carroll to ground out. Montreal is the first team not to score more than four runs in any of its first 16 games since the 1968 Chicago White Sox.
Rockies 7, Dodgers 1, 6 innings
Denver — Shawn Estes (3-1) allowed only two hits for Colorado, and Matt Holliday hit his first major league homer and drove in three runs. Holliday, promoted from the minors April 14, also doubled. Vinny Castilla went 3-for-3 with a home run Jose Lima (2-1) was tagged for seven runs and six hits in three innings. The Rockies won two of three at Coors Field, the first series the Dodgers have lost this season.
