Former KU student’s robbery hearing delayed

The former Kansas University student charged with robbing three local banks at gunpoint has had a court date postponed again.

Jeffrey R. Cox was to appear Friday in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan., for a hearing on pretrial motions, but the hearing has been reset for May 10.

Cox, 21, a former business student, was arrested late last year by FBI agents at a relative’s home in Atlanta. He’s charged with the following robberies: Feb. 2, 2003, at Central National Bank, 711 Wakarusa Drive; June 9, 2003, at Douglas County Bank, 711 W. 23rd St.; and Dec. 10, 2003, at University National Bank, 1400 Kasold Drive.

Arrested brothers to remain in custody

Twin brothers from Lawrence have been ordered to remain in federal custody as they await trial on drug and weapons charges.

In a hearing Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan., Magistrate David J. Waxse ordered Los Rovell Dahda and Roosevelt Rico Dahda, both 22, to be detained pending trial.

Los Dahda is charged with having an illegal sawed-off shotgun. Roosevelt Dahda is charged with using a firearm in relation to trafficking in marijuana and cocaine.

Lawrence Police arrested the men earlier this month after a roughly monthlong investigation, police said.

Both men will appear for arraignment May 3.

Hearing set for trucker charged in fatal wreck

A preliminary hearing for the trucker charged with killing a Baker University student while driving under the influence has been scheduled for May 13 in Douglas County District Court.

Yan R. McHenry, 46, Dallas, faces one count of involuntary manslaughter for the death of 19-year-old Shawn Trager in a wreck April 13 on U.S. Highway 56 near Baldwin. McHenry also is charged with one count of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and three counts of aggravated battery for the injuries caused to three other people during the collision.

The preliminary hearing will be an opportunity for his defense attorney to cross-examine witnesses before trial. Prosecutors must present enough evidence to convince the judge that probable cause exists to try the case.

McHenry is on parole for a cocaine charge in Texas and remains in the Douglas County Jail.

Parole absconders list now available online

Topeka — Information on wanted criminals who have left parole or post-release supervision is now online.

The Web site lists nearly 340 parole absconders from the Kansas Department of Corrections and contains background information on each absconder’s conviction record and known aliases.

Kansas Atty. Gen. Phill Kline said that the Web site, docnet.dc.state.ks.us/ kasper2/abscondexpl.htm, would be a valuable tool in “efforts to rid our streets of these scofflaws.”

Anyone with information on a parole absconder is encouraged to contact their local law enforcement agency or the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
