Topeka ? Although Kansas University’s final home tennis match ended with 5-2 loss to Border War rival Missouri on Sunday, KU’s three seniors had quite a farewell at Wood Valley Racquet Club.

Seniors Courtney Steinbock and Emily Haylock won at the No. 1 and 2 singles, and fellow senior Kristen Steinbock came close to a senior sweep.

KU coach Amy Hall said it was the best Courtney Steinbock and Haylock played all season.

“They were just mentally focused and ready to play,” Hall said.

Courtney Steinbock registered the first win, 6-2, 6-1 over Urska Juric.

“For her to play the way she did and beat a ranked ITA player was quite a challenge,” Hall said. “She took the challenge.”

Courtney Steinbock rolled her right ankle against Iowa State on April 3. She had missed two straight matches before playing in KU’s 4-3 victory over Nebraska on Saturday afternoon.

“That win feels absolutely awesome,” she said. “I played really good today, and I left it all out on the court today. Why not?”

Courtney Steinbock said she still felt pressure from the injury, listing her condition at “78 percent.”

“It’s slowly but surely getting better,” she said.

Haylock followed up her singles win against Nebraska with a victory over Katka Sevcikova of Missouri (13-8 overall, 6-5 Big 12 Conference) by forcing a third set. Haylock won, 6-7, 7-6, 6-1.

“They played awesome,” Missouri coach Blake Starkey said of the three Jayhawk seniors. “I’ll be glad to see those three seniors go.”

Although Kansas (6-13, 4-5) has no more home matches, it still has two conference meetings with two of the top teams in the nation — Texas A&M on Saturday and Texas on Sunday.

Kansas will travel to Norman, Okla., for the conference tournament starting April 29.

“We just need to get everybody playing the way that they can on one day,” Courtney Steinbock said.
