Maryland wins lawsuit against newspaper

Annapolis, Md. — The University of Maryland won a partial victory in its fight to avoid disclosing information about income that football coach Ralph Friedgen and basketball coach Gary Williams earn from outside contracts.

The Court of Appeals on Thursday reversed a 2002 ruling by a Prince George’s County Circuit Court judge that all contracts between the coaches and third parties that result from their employment with the university must be disclosed.

The appeals court said in a 6-1 ruling that such contracts were not necessarily exempt from the state public information law and could be public records in some cases.

The court also ruled unanimously the university’s direct contracts with Williams and Friedgen were public records and must be made available for public inspection.

The ruling by the state’s highest court came in a lawsuit filed by The (Baltimore) Sun after the university refused to release its contracts with the coaches.

Duke advanced to the Final Four this season, losing to eventual champion Connecticut 79-78 in the semifinals.
