- Adults from Boy Scout Troop 59, chartered to the First Presbyterian Church of Lawrence, recently had a unique opportunity to help a young man obtain his Eagle Scout Rank. Scoutmaster Mark Stogsdill had received an e-mail through the Troop’s Web site from a 17-year-old Boy Scout from Albuquerque, N.M. He was working as a “Lone Scout,” a boy who is not part of a troop. His family is temporarily living in Benouville, France. His Eagle Scout project was to replace all 50 of the U.S. state flags on display in the Airborne Museum in Saint Mere Eglise near Normandy, France. Saint Mere Eglise is the city where American paratroopers died on D-Day when they missed their target and landed in what was then a German-occupied town. The event’s 60th anniversary is June 6 and the Scout is hoping to replace the state flags before then. Stogsdill forwarded the request to a number of adult leaders and Assistant Scoutmaster Ray Bergman, who was able to obtain a Kansas flag within an hour. Bergman is a major in the Kansas Army National Guard and secured the flag through the Adjutant General’s Office.
