Clinton Parkway Assembly of God

Wednesday Bible study is on “Esther” at 7 p.m. at Clinton Parkway Assembly of God, 3200 Clinton Parkway.

Laura Petrie will lead the “Purpose Driven Life” Study at 7 p.m. Monday, as well as at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, at the church

WISH (Worship for Severely Handicapped) will meet for its monthly fellowship time at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Quilt Club of Clinton Parkway Assembly will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the activity center.

CrossPointe Church

CrossPointe Church will meet for worship at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Bishop Seabury Academy, 4120 Clinton Parkway.

Service will have contemporary worship music, followed by a message from the Rev. Beau Abernathy.

Youth group meets at 9:15 a.m. Sunday.

First Baptist Church

Community is welcome to attend worship this second Sunday of Easter at First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Drive.

The Rev. Marcus McFaul will preach “Things Seen and Unseen” at both the 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Sunday services.

There will also be music (“Antiphonal Psalm”) from the bell choirs, brass choir and the chancel choir.

First Christian Church

The guest speaker for Sexual Violence Awareness Month will be Sarah Terwelp, executive director of the Women’s Transitional Shelter and a member of First Christian Church, 1000 Ky.

She will discuss the shelter’s outreach and her encounters with the issue of sexual violence. Terwelp will speak at the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday services. Child care is provided.

The Rev. Randy Beeman begins a new message series Sunday called “Whoppers of the World, Outrageous Lies We Buy Into.” The first message will be about buying into the lie of the motivational movement.

First United Methodist Church

United Methodist Women’s Connection Event will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

Event will feature the church’s African Muslim sister, Ndeye Ceesay, who grew up in Senegal on the West Coast of Africa. Ceesay, a well-known author, is frequently brought to the United States to lecture at universities.

A social time will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Brady Hall. A dinner featuring West African cuisine, prepared by Maceli’s Catering, will be served at 6:30 p.m.

Cost of the meal is $6. Those who would like to only hear the program are invited to come at 7 p.m.

Immanuel Lutheran Church and University Student Center

The 8:30 a.m. traditional service and the 11 a.m. contemporary service Sunday will have the celebration of Communion at Immanuel Lutheran Church and University Student Center, 2104 15th St. Visitors are welcome to attend.

Bible studies are at 9:45 a.m. Sunday.

University students are invited to attend the 5:30 p.m. Thursday fellowship supper at the church’s Friendship Center.

Lawrence Jewish Community Center

Holocaust Remembrance Day will be observed at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Lawrence Jewish Community Center, 917 Highland Drive.

There will be a memorial ceremony for the 6 million Jews who died in the Holocaust during World War II in Europe.

Roy Schwartzman, professor of speech and communications at Northwest Missouri State University, will speak on the topic, “Why Did the Holocaust Happen?” Schwartzman is also an historian of the Holocaust.

Lawrence Wesleyan Church

Women of the community are invited to attend a spring salad luncheon at 11 a.m. today at Lawrence Wesleyan Church, 3705 Clinton Parkway.

New members will be welcomed during both Sunday worship services.

The Rev. Nate Rovenstine will begin a three-week sermon series Sunday called “Play to the Audience of One.”

Traditional worship service is at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, with a contemporary worship service at 10:45 a.m.

Mother to Mother

Mother to Mother of Douglas County, a ministry of reconciliation that is supported by a group of area churches, has launched its annual fund-raiser, “A Tribute to Mothers.”

The tribute honors mothers by publishing their names in the Journal-World on Mother’s Day, which is May 9.

Tributes can be purchased at area churches before and after worship services Sunday and April 25, or by sending a check (and enclosing the names of the mothers that you wish to honor) to: Mother to Mother, Box 342, Lawrence, Kan., 66044.

Final deadline is at 10 a.m. May 5.

Plymouth Congregational Church

Due to the Called Congregational Meeting at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt., there will be a combined worship service at 9:30 a.m.

There will be no contemporary service at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

The 9:30 a.m. service will feature an offertory performed by Evan Hilpman and Kyle Chauvin on violin and piano. These two young men were recently heard nationwide on National Public Radio.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

The men’s Bible study/breakfast club meets at 7 a.m. Saturday at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St. Led by the Rev. Darrel Proffitt, the men continue to study the Book of Genesis. New people are always welcome.

The “Time to Grow” Campaign will focus on the theme “Living Beyond Limitations” at all four Sunday worship services.

At the 9 a.m. service, a special renewal of wedding vows will take place for all who wish to ask God’s blessing on their marriages.

The 5:30 p.m. service will offer special praise music by the contemporary ensemble. The children who were unable to present their Lenten offerings will have the opportunity at the 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. services.

Theologian in Residence Program

A communal breakfast with New Testament scholar John Dominic Crossan will be from 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. Sunday at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt. It will be an informal discussion with Crossan and attendees at the 11 Advance Crossan Workshops held during the past three months. Event is free and open to the public.

Crossan is the 2004 Theologian in Residence.

The primary opportunity for members of area churches to meet Crossan during his three-day visit to Kansas will be from 3 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Plymouth.

Crossan will discuss “The Resurrection of Jesus and American Christianity: What the post-Easter Jesus Means for American Christians,” and “Personal Reflections: My Faith Journey.”

There will be presentations, small-group discussions, a social reception and a question-and-answer session.

There is on-site registration for the afternoon events. Cost is $30 per person for the whole program, or $5 per person for members of participating congregations and students.

Trinity Lutheran Church

The Rev. Jimmy Joe, coordinator of partnership programs for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea, will be the guest preacher at worship services Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H.

Joe assists the Central States Synod in establishing and developing Companion Synod Relations with the Kotte Districts of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea.

He will also offer a forum on the Church in Papua New Guinea during the 9:45 a.m. Sunday education hour in the social room. Later Sunday he will be the guest of Lutheran Campus Ministry.

All women are invited to stroll through a spring garden at the Women of the ELCA’s spring banquet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the church’s fellowship hall. Cost is $8. Reservations are needed and can be made by calling the church office at 843-4150. Theme is “What Mama Told Me.”

Bethany College Symphonic Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. April 24 in the church’s fellowship hall. The 50-member ensemble will be on its spring tour and perform this one evening in Lawrence. Bethany College, in Lindsborg, is a liberal arts college supported by the Evangelic Lutheran Church in America.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

A spiritual celebration, “Sharing Service on Religious Language, Ritual and Future Directions for the Service,” will be presented from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road.

From 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., there will be a dedication ceremony and a program, “Contours of Religion in Douglas County,” presented by Tim Miller, professor of religious studies at Kansas University.

There will be coffee and fellowship from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Mark Larson, a member of the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, will receive the Social Justice Award from the Prairie Star District of the Unitarian Universalist Association April 24 in Kansas City, Mo. He will receive the award at the annual conference of the association.

University Community of Christ

Community of Christ members are invited to attend a Midlands Mission Center Conference today at the Community of Christ — Bethel Congregation, at 8510 Leavenworth Road in Kansas City, Kan.

Youth group members under the leadership of Debbie Zabel and Nancy Zahniser will open Christ’s Cafe for breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at University Community of Christ, 1900 University Drive. Goodwill offering will be accepted, in order to defray expenses and to help the youth group raise money for its special projects and activities.

Pam Mathena, finance director for both the Midlands Mission Center and for Share, Inc., will deliver the sermon “Put Aside Fear and Doubt” at the 10 a.m. Sunday worship service.

Spring cleaning and grounds keeping for volunteers will be from 8 a.m. to noon April 24 at the church.

West Side Presbyterian Church

“Embraced by Love” will be the message brought by the Rev. Patricia Slider at the 11 a.m. Sunday worship service at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.

Deacons Elizabeth Gabel and Ann Cook will lead the 3 p.m. Sunday worship service at on the second floor of Presbyterian Manor.

All-Church Mission Potluck Dinner will be May 2. Speaker will be the Rev. Jan Nolting-Carter, associate pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Topeka.
