Seabury soccer wins

Pottorff's first goal lead to first victory

With the type of offensive pressure Seabury Academy was putting on Overland Park Hyman-Brand on Thursday, it was only a matter of time before the Seahawks would find the net.

When Seabury did finally score, it meant a lot to one Seahawk in particular. Sophomore defender Katie Pottorff scored the first goal of her career in a 1-0 Seabury victory at the Youth Sports Inc. fields, the Seahawks’ first win of the year.

“Coach said to take it up if I got it,” Pottorff said. “I’ve been planning it for four years.”

Pottorff’s shot came just before the 53rd minute. She buried the ball it in the top-left corner of the Rams’ net from about 20 feet away.

Seabury (1-2) had several opportunities to score in the first half, namely from sophomore Linaya Newstrom, junior Elise Stella and junior Laura Frizell.

Pottorff also had a chance in the first half, when one of her blasts bounced of the left post in the 23rd minute.

Although the game was scoreless going into halftime, the first half and the momentum of the game clearly belonged to Seahawks.

“I just told them to keep pressing, to go at them one by one,” Seabury coach Amanda Williams said. “I told them the goal would come. They didn’t quit.”

Hyman-Brand (3-1) had its chances to score as well with quick breakaways, but stifling goaltending by Lindsey Ahlen kept the Rams scoreless.

Seabury will play host Monday to Kansas City Harmon.

Seabury Academy's Katie Pottorff (8) puts a move on a Hyman Brand defender on the way to her first career goal. The Seahawks claimed their first victory of the season, 1-0, Thursday at the Youth Sports Inc. fields.
