Has the “makeover” genre reached the saturation point? Or is it merely mutating into something new? We’ve seen “Extreme Makeover” morph into “The Swan.” Tonight, the car restoration theme of “Monster Garage” takes on elements of “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,” “Pimp My Ride” and “Punk’d” on the new series “Overhaulin'” (8 p.m., TLC).

On every episode of “Overhaulin’,” the unsuspecting owner of a modest vehicle or nonfunctioning bomb will be set up by a friend or loved one. He or she will arrange for that car to be “stolen” by “Overhaulin'” hosts Chris Jacobs and Courtney Hanson, who pose as “repo” agents. Once seized, the car falls into the creative clutches of a team helmed by auto-designing legend Chip Foose and his crack team of fabricators and engineers.

“Overhaulin'” follows the artistic process of renovation as well as the drama that ensues when an unsuspecting owner is separated from a car for more than a week at a time. This can get tricky, and at times, traumatic.

• Speaking of children being mortified by their parents, the new six-episode series “Showbiz Moms” (8 p.m., Bravo) follows five families who rearrange their schedules and lives as they put their kids through beauty pageants and audition for roles in motion pictures, television commercials and singing groups.
• Then there’s “American Idol” (7 p.m., Fox). There may be eight remaining contestants, but I have only one question. Just how badly does redheaded John Stevens have to sing before the home audience begins to notice? Not only does he manage to survive week after week, he doesn’t even land in the bottom three. Has this William Hung thing gotten out of hand? Is truly bad music sweeping the nation?
