Kansas City, Mo. ? Less than one week into the season, a pattern has emerged for Cleveland and Kansas City.

The Indians blow late leads and lose in extra innings. The Royals pitch lousy but win on clutch hits.

Aaron Guiel’s two-out RBI single in the 10th inning Saturday gave Kansas City a 7-6 victory over the Indians, who blew a three-run lead in the ninth.

Mike Sweeney, batting .158, tied it at 6 with a two-out, two-run single off David Riske in the ninth.

“Even with two strikes, I didn’t feel nervous,” Sweeney said. “I didn’t feel any pressure. I just wanted to get the job done. I was still sure I could come through.”

Matt Stairs singled off Rafael Betancourt (0-1) with two outs in the 10th, and pinch-runner Rich Thompson stole second. The left-handed hitting Guiel, who had a two-run homer in the third inning, lined a game-winning single to center off Scott Stewart.

Guiel also had a two-run double off the left-handed Stewart to break a scoreless tie in the seventh in Kansas City’s 3-1 victory Friday night.

“I pitched him totally different this time, and he beat me again,” Stewart said. “A lefty is a lefty. I’ve got one thing to do.”

There are times, Guiel said, when he preferred to face a left-hander.

“A lot of times I enjoy facing lefties, especially if maybe I’m not swinging the bat well,” he said. “A lot of times when I’m facing a lefty, it actually keeps my shoulder in and does a lot of things to help my swing. I like facing them.”

Scott Sullivan (1-0) picked up the win with one inning of scoreless relief.

It was the second walk-off win for the Royals this week. They scored six ninth-inning runs against the Chicago White Sox on Monday for a 9-7 victory and the biggest ninth-inning comeback on opening day in 103 years.

“I think it says a lot about the character of this team,” Sweeney said. “We know we’re never going to give up.”

The Indians also squandered save opportunities and lost in extra innings to Minnesota in their first two games of the year. Riske has blown two saves.

“The bullpen has me scratching my head,” Cleveland manager Eric Wedge said. “We’ve got guys down there who we thought were going to stabilize our bullpen.”

C.C. Sabathia threw eight strong innings, and Travis Hafner went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs to give the Indians a 6-3 lead going into the ninth.

Sabathia also got a no-decision in Minnesota. He went seven scoreless innings, but the bullpen lost the lead, and the Twins won in the 11th.

“It’s a tough loss for everybody,” Sabathia said. “It’s not just me. But I’ll take my chances any day with Riske. I’ll go eight and turn it over to him in the ninth any time.”

Riske gave up a leadoff single to Ken Harvey, then Guiel singled, and Tony Graffanino hit an RBI single to make it 6-4.

Ronnie Belliard and Matt Lawton had two hits each for the Indians.

Kansas City’s Brian Anderson was ineffective for the second straight start, giving up eight hits and five runs in five innings. In his first two starts, Anderson is 0-1 with an ERA of 10.00.

Guiel gave the Royals a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the third.

But in the fourth, Casey Blake singled with one out and scored on Lawton’s RBI double. With two outs, Victor Martinez blooped an RBI single into left, and Hafner hit an RBI double into right-center.

Hafner scored on a single by Lou Merloni, then Belliard made it 5-2 with an RBI double. Hafner made it 6-3 with a leadoff homer off Shawn Camp in the ninth.

Sabathia issued back-to-back walks with one out in the fifth and Joe Randa, who broke an 0-for-11 skid his previous at-bat, hit an RBI single for Kansas City’s third run.

Notes: Harvey made a great diving stop of Alex Escobar’s smash in the fourth at first base, saving a run. … Cleveland RF Jody Gerut also made an outstanding play, running into foul territory and sliding on his knees to catch Randa’s popup in the second. … Watching Thompson score the winning run was his mother, Anne, who is home briefly from Nicaragua where she works for Food for the Hungry.
