President promises to maintain Iraq efforts

? Declaring the “enemies of freedom will fail” in Iraq, President Bush vowed Saturday to press on there with a “multicity offensive” for weeks, if necessary, to restore order.

In Fallujah, he said, U.S. Marines were regaining control “block by block,” and other forces elsewhere were hunting down insurgents, engaging them and taking prisoners.

“Our decisive actions will continue until these enemies of democracy are dealt with,” Bush said in his weekly radio address from his ranch, where he is spending Easter weekend.

With violence escalating dramatically in the past two weeks throughout Iraq, the president has been urged by Republicans and Democrats alike to speak out on the U.S. mission there. But he has remained secluded at his ranch since Tuesday, when he made a quick campaign-style trip to the battleground state of Arkansas.

In his radio address, Bush stood firmly behind the June 30 date to transfer sovereignty in Iraq to the Iraqis. But he made clear, as he has repeatedly, that the U.S.-led military forces would remain as long as needed to ensure order and stability.

“We will win this test of wills and overcome every challenge,” he vowed, asserting that only a “small fraction” of Iraqis were involved in the current uprisings.
