Celtics’ playoff hopes on hold
Hawks prevent Boston from clinching berth
Atlanta ? It’s all a matter of playing time for Bob Sura.
Sura registered his second consecutive triple-double, and the Atlanta Hawks prevented the Boston Celtics from clinching a playoff spot with a 110-99 victory Saturday night.
Sura had 15 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds to become the first Atlanta player to have two straight triple-doubles. The 6-foot-3 guard had 12 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds Friday night in a 116-101 win at Chicago for the first triple-double of his career.
“I’m thrilled by the way I’m playing. I’ve come close (to a triple-double) a couple of times, but never like this. I’m getting a lot of minutes and showing what I can do,” said Sura, who played 35 minutes.
Atlanta coach Terry Stotts said, “I can’t remember being part of a player getting back-to-back triple-doubles.”
Sura is averaging 14.4 points, 8.4 rebounds and 5.0 assists in 25 games with Atlanta.
In 16 games as a starer, Sura’s averaging 16.3 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.6 assists in 16 games.
“It’s no fluke. I’ve been playing well for 25 games now, and it couldn’t happen at a better time since I’ll be a free agent at the end of the season,” he said.
Sura averaged 3.8 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 53 games with the Pistons.
Stephen Jackson scored 28 points, Chris Crawford had 23 and Jason Terry added 21 for the Hawks, who are 3-0 against Boston this season.
The Celtics lost their fourth straight and still need one more win or a Philadelphia loss to clinch the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot.
“You get frustrated, but at the same time, you have to realize you have two games left to still try to get in the playoffs,” said Paul Pierce, who scored 19 points. “We still feel good about ourselves. We’ve played like a tired team. We just have to get back to practice tomorrow and regroup.”
Philadelphia, with three games left, is at New Jersey today. The Celtics, with two games left, play at home on Monday night against Miami and Wednesday night against the Hawks.
“There’s no pressure. We have two home games left,” said Boston’s Chuck Atkins, who had 10 points and nine assists.
