Baylor thumps Kansas

Bears roll to 7-0 victory over Jayhawks

After Saturday’s match against Baylor, Kansas University tennis coach Amy Hall said her team had been in peaks and valleys this season.

Unfortunately for her team, Kansas couldn’t get out of the valley at Wood Valley Racquet Club. The Bears swept the Jayhawks, 7-0.

The Bears (9-9, 5-2) used an international arsenal — only one player is from the United States — and started the afternoon by sweeping all three doubles matches.

Baylor then began to put away Kansas systematically in singles competition by winning the opening set of all six matches.

To Kansas’ credit, several team members rebounded in the second set.

In the top-seeded singles match, senior Emily Haylock lost the opening set to Carolin Walter, but forced a third set by winning the second set, 6-3.

KU sophomore Luiza Loureiro forced a tiebreaker with Iva Mihaylova by winning the second set, 7-5, after losing, 6-2, in the opening set.

Still, the Jayhawks (5-12, 3-4) were shut out.

“It’s all coming together,” Haylock said. “We’re just a little slow from the start, especially in doubles.”

Hall said she wanted to see more focus from her club from point to point, not set to set.

“One thing we need to do is concentrate on the moment,” Hall said. “Winning points leads to winning games.”

The match originally was scheduled to take place at Robinson Courts on the KU campus, but rainy, cold weather forced the match to be played at the indoor facility at Wood Valley.

Kansas next will play at Nebraska on Saturday before heading back to close out the home schedule against Missouri on Sunday. The Jayhawks could have the services of injured senior Courtney Steinbock for the match against the Tigers, but that is still to be determined. She continues to be listed as day-to-day.

Kansas University's Emily Haylock trades groundstrokes with Baylor's Carolin Walter during their singles match. Walter won the match, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0, Saturday in Topeka.
