Benefit concerts set for LINK, Jubilee Cafe

Back-to-back musical fund-raisers later this month will raise money to feed the city’s poor and homeless.

Jubilee Cafe will sponsor an over-18 show by the rock band Shaking Tree at 9 p.m. April 21 at The Granada, 1020 Mass., to raise money for the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen, the downtown organization that serves free noon meals to more than 130 people a day.

The next night at 6:30 p.m., Kansas University’s Bachelor of Social Work Student Group will sponsor a family-friendly concert by Acme Jazz at Abe & Jake’s Landing, 8 E. Sixth St. Proceeds will also go to LINK, 221 W. 10th St., which will receive matching funds from a Rhode Island philanthropist for money raised during the two nights.

“It’ll be two different events, so hopefully it will draw a diverse community,” said Margaret Perkins-McGuinness, president of the social work student group.

Ashley Stallbaumer of Jubilee Cafe, 946 Vt., which serves breakfast to Lawrence’s poor, said her organization was sponsoring a LINK fund-raiser in order to broaden its reach to the city’s hungry.

“Our organizations are so similar,” she said. “We felt by helping LINK, we’re helping the same people we help at Jubilee Cafe.”

LINK’s Herman Leon said involvement by the youth-oriented organizations — Jubilee Cafe is largely run by KU students — was a welcome sign for his organization’s future. The organization also received a recent donation of canned food from students at New York School, 936 NY.

“LINK,” he said, “is trying to tap young blood.”

Leon said admission to the Acme Jazz concert is a $5 donation, and $4 for the Shaking Tree concert.

LINK serves meals from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. For more information, call Leon at 843-0579.
