Smoking ban now has majority support

A smoking ban for bars and restaurants now has the support of a majority of Lawrence city commissioners.

Commissioner Mike Rundle told the Journal-World on Tuesday afternoon that health research provided by advocates of a ban is “pretty compelling.” A ban, he said, would keep restaurant and bar workers from suffering the effects of secondhand smoke.

“The health impact on workers seems pretty significant,” said Rundle, expected to be selected mayor by his colleagues tonight. “I think we’re going to be touching a lot more workers’ lives with this than we did with the living wage ordinance.”

Outgoing Mayor David Dunfield and Commissioner David Schauner had already announced their support for some type of smoking ban — a detailed ordinance has not yet been made public. That leaves just two commissioners, a minority, officially undecided on the topic: Boog Highberger and Sue Hack.
