‘Hellboy’ walks tall with $23.5 million debut

Los Angeles — A wisecracking demon from hell took down The Rock for the weekend’s box-office title.

“Hellboy,” starring Ron Perlman as the comic-book superhero with red skin, horns and a tail, debuted as the top flick with $23.5 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The Rock’s “Walking Tall,” a remake of the 1973 vigilante-justice tale, opened in second place with $15.3 million.

Other estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at North American theaters, according to Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc.

3. “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed,” $15.1 million.

4. “Home on the Range,” $14 million.

5. “The Prince and Me,” $10 million.

6. “The Passion of the Christ,” $9.9 million.

7. “The Ladykillers,” $7 million.

8. “Jersey Girl,” $5.1 million.

9. “Dawn of the Dead,” $4.4 million.

10. “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” $3.6 million.

Reality Dallas-style

Dallas — More than 500 people eager to win $1 million from Mark Cuban attended an open casting call for the Dallas Mavericks owner’s upcoming reality television show.

Sixteen people will be chosen from auditions in five cities and from submitted video applications. But there’s still no word on what it will take to win the money on the ABC show “The Benefactor.”

“It’s like ‘Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory,”‘ Cuban told the Dallas Morning News for its Sunday editions. “When you walked into Willy’s factory, you had no idea what the game was.”

‘The Duke’ gets his own stamp

Beverly Hills, Calif.– He was a cowboy, a Green Beret, a jet pilot and a detective during his long acting career.

Now, John Wayne will grace a postage stamp.

The U.S. Postal Service unveiled its annual “Legends of Hollywood” commemorative postage stamp Saturday night at a private fund-raiser.

The fund-raiser was for the John Wayne Cancer Institute and was at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

This is not the first time Wayne’s likeness has appeared on a stamp. In 1990, he was pictured on one of four 25-cent U.S. commemorative postage stamps honoring films released in 1939.

Ozzy Osbourne blames doctor for drug problem

Los Angeles — Rocker Ozzy Osbourne filed a complaint with the state medical board, accusing a Beverly Hills doctor of overprescribing addictive drugs to him.

Osbourne says the drugs led to his disoriented behavior on the reality TV series “The Osbournes,” the Los Angeles Times reported.

Authorities asked Dr. David Kipper to turn over copies of Osbourne’s medical records.

Osbourne filed the complaint in early March, claiming Kipper had him take excessive quantities of Dexedrine, Valium, Zyprexa and other powerful medications.
