Kappelman services

Services for Glenn L. Kappelman, 81, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence. Military graveside services will be conducted by American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Kappelman died Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Nov. 29, 1922, in Ottawa, the son of Otto L. and Erma Fern (Bouse) Kappelman. He attended Lawrence schools and graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1941.

Mr. Kappelman received his bachelor’s degree in 1948 and his master’s degree in political science in 1950, both from Kansas University.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, 106th Cavalry Division. He served in Europe during World War II from 1943 to 1946.

Mr. Kappelman was a real estate broker and a partner at Calvin-Eddy-Kappelman Insurance and Real Estate before he retired. He was twice named Lawrence Realtor of the Year.

In the 1960s, Mr. Kappelman advocated the abolishment of discriminatory housing practices and was active with the Lawrence Planning Commission and other civic committees.

He was a member of the American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14; Veterans of Foreign Wars Alford-Clarke Post No. 852; and the 96th Black Hawk Assn.

Mr. Kappelman worked with or was a member of the Lawrence Democrats, Chamber of Commerce, Kansas University Alumni Association, Watkins Community Museum of History, Lawrence Arts Center, Lawrence Stamp Club and Centennial and Sesquicentennial committees.

He also was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Sigma Phi Epsilon.

He married Elizabeth “Betty” J. Lloyd on Jan. 4, 1953, in Spring Hill. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, Melanie K. Kappelman, Mission Hills; a son, Matthew Kappelman, Lawrence; a sister, LaVerne Harris, Celebration, Fla.; and a granddaughter.

A son, Mark, died earlier.

Family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

The family suggests memorials to the Mark Kappelman Scholarship Fund through the KU Endowment Association or the church building fund, sent in care of the mortuary.
