Jayhawks to honor longtime baseball coach Temple

Floyd Temple, who coached Kansas University’s baseball team over four decades, will throw out the first pitch for the second game of the KU-OU series at 6 tonight.

Also, Temple’s No. 13 jersey, officially retired in 1992, will be unveiled on the Hoglund Ballpark outfield wall.

“My goal is to break his record before I’m done,” current KU coach Ritch Price said of Kansas baseball’s all-time winningest coach. “I’ve got to coach about 20 years to do it.”

Temple, who still lives in Lawrence, coached the Jayhawks from 1954-1981 and posted 437 career victories, but Price stressed Temple’s importance to the program went beyond victories.

“I think the magnitude of what he’s done is visible when you see that Forrest Hoglund played for him,” Price said, “and you look at what Forrest Hoglund has given back to the university.”

Hoglund contributed the funds to build Hoglund Ballpark, the Jayhawks’ baseball home, and was co-chair of the KUFirst fund, a $500 million fund-raising campaign for the university.

Many former Jayhawks who played for Temple — like Gary Padgett and John Tombold — will be here tonight.

“Those are people that are giving back to our program after they’ve become successful with their degree from KU,” Price said. “(Temple) had a lot to do with that.”
