Suspect indicted in investment fraud case

? A grand jury has indicted a man accused of defrauding investors of nearly $300,000.

John Francis Haggerty, 39, of Overland Park, was indicted Thursday on two counts of wire fraud and one count of transporting stolen securities.

The indictment alleges Haggerty presented himself as an investor or stockbroker doing business through his trading company, JFH Trading Corp., although he had been barred from the National Association of Security Dealers in 1998. Haggerty was barred for making untrue statements, making baseless price predictions and using devices to defraud customers.

From April 1999 to April 2000, the indictment said, he persuaded customers to invest through him, and then used about $294,500 of their money for his own use.

If convicted on all counts, Haggerty could face up to 50 years in prison.
