Harlan Melchior Jr.

? Services for Harlan G. Melchior Jr., 91, Scottsdale, were at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Church in Scottsdale. Private inurnment was in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque, Iowa.

Mr. Melchior died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, in Scottsdale.

He was born April 23, 1912, in Dubuque, the son of Harlan G. and Louise (Pilmaier) Melchior. He graduated from Columbia Academy and College in 1934 and later received graduate degrees in banking from the University of Wisconsin and Northwestern University.

Mr. Melchior served for four years with the 13th Army Air Force as a staff sergeant, stationed in the United States and South Pacific during World War II. He returned to Dubuque after the war to rejoin American Trust and Savings Bank, where he was vice president of the trust department until he retired in 1977. He worked in banking for 60 years.

He married Virginia Donovan on Jan. 28, 1942. She survives of Scottsdale.

Other survivors include two daughters, Mary Doveton, Lawrence, Kan., and Sue VanLeer, Scottsdale; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice of the Valley in Scottsdale or Hospice Care in Douglas County in Lawrence.
