Democrats lay out delegate-selection plan

The Kansas Democratic State Committee has adopted its delegate selection plan for the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

The plan calls for local caucuses by state Senate districts on March 13, 2004. At the caucuses, Democrats will have the chance to vote for a candidate or remain uncommitted. These local caucuses will elect delegates for the congressional district convention April 3, 2004.

Each congressional district convention will select delegates and alternates for the Democratic National Convention. A state convention at the end of April will determine the remaining Kansas delegation.

Education

Lawrence picks teachers for state Horizon Award

The Lawrence school district has selected teachers from Sunflower School and Central Junior High School for the Kansas Horizon Award.

The Kansas Department of Education program honors excellent teachers during their second year of teaching. Each district in Kansas nominates an elementary and secondary school teacher.

Lawrence’s nominees are Marcia Riggins, a first-grade teacher at Sunflower, and Erin Stewart, a music teacher at Central.

Neighborhood associations

East Lawrence group stages block party

Bluegrass, burgers and beer were equally popular Saturday evening at the East Lawrence Neighborhood Assn.’s block party.

While a band played from the porch of the Old Home Depot on Pennsylvania Street, about 75 neighbors from the area dug into a potluck buffet. It’s an annual event that draws an eclectic crowd of all ages, coordinator Aimee Polson said, with “something for everyone.”

For those who didn’t care for either the beer drinking or music, like 7-year-old Jenny Nace, there was an overflowing table of colorful craft supplies available for play. Jenny was sporting a shiny, gold cape and leopard print, paper-bag hat that she made with the help of a grown-up, she said.

“This is my first time here,” she said, using the authoritative tone wearing such an outfit requires. “I’m wary of jumping on the moon walk after just breaking my ankle 18 months ago. At least I got to eat a hamburger and a cookie.”
