Chicago powers past K.C. – White Sox 11, Royals 2

Beltran joins 100 runs-100 RBIs-30 stolen bases club

? Jose Valentin and Jon Garland spoiled Carlos Beltran’s big moment.

Beltran’s leadoff homer in the fourth inning made him the sixth player since 1900 to have 100 runs, 100 RBIs and 30 stolen bases in three seasons.

But Valentin hit a grand slam, one of three home runs for Chicago, and Garland pitched three-hit ball for eight innings as the White Sox routed the Kansas City Royals, 11-2, Friday night.

Valentin’s seventh career slam was his eighth homer of the season against the Royals, and it tied his career high of 28.

“He’s killing us, man,” said Beltran, whose 26th home run gave him 100 RBIs and 102 runs this year. He has 41 steals.

“When I went up to bat, I had faith I was going to hit a home run,” he said. “When I crossed home plate, I just started laughing.”

Only Beltran, Barry Bonds and George Sisler have managed the feat in three straight seasons. Honus Wagner, Kiki Cuyler and Ty Cobb also did it. All are in the Hall of Fame except Bonds, who is a lock for induction when he retires.

But Beltran’s home run was just about the only bright spot for the Royals.

“Jon Garland was really good tonight,” Chicago manager Jerry Manuel said. “One of the best hitters in baseball got to him, but other than that he was really good.”

Carlos Lee and Frank Thomas hit solo shots off starter Darrell May (10-8) as the White Sox broke their club record of 217 home runs set last season.

Lee’s leadoff homer, his career-high 31st, broke the record and ignited a three-run second inning for the White Sox.

May went seven innings, allowing five runs on seven hits without a walk or a strikeout. He retired 12 straight batters between Thomas’ home run in the third and Joe Crede’s leadoff double in the seventh.
