Seahawks, Sisson reunite

Former Seabury student races old teammates

? Regan Sisson wasn’t lost. She just missed everybody.

The Eudora sophomore spent most of her time Thursday at the Tonganoxie Invitational socializing with the Seabury Academy cross country team. She then had a neck-and-neck race with Seabury’s Katie Pottorff, and gave her a big congratulatory hug afterwards.

Why all the love?

Well, Sisson spent her last three years at Seabury before going back to public school in her hometown of Eudora. Now, despite wearing Cardinal red, she admits her allegiance still is torn.

So was Seabury coach Jill Boyle’s.

“I just wanted to rip that jersey off of her and put a Seabury one back on,” Boyle said with a laugh. “I coached her for three years. I’m always going to cheer for her.”

Sisson finished 10th out of 74 runners Thursday, just one spot in front of Pottorff, her good friend and, suddenly, her competitor.

“I had mixed emotions,” Sisson said. “I wanted to do good, but I still want to be friends with all of them.”

Fortunately, she did both. Sisson even passed Pottorff near the finish line, but Pottorff just was grateful Sisson was there.

“It was good to run against her,” said Pottorff, a sophomore. “We really push each other well. I ran faster because of her.”

With only four varsity girls and three varsity boys, the Seahawks didn’t qualify for team scores, but both Pottorff (11th) and Wyn Cromwell (27th) on the girls side and sophomore Adam Davis, who took 17th in the boys race, earned medals.

Davis ran the 5,000 meter race in 18:15, while Pottorff ran the two-mile race in 13:08.

“Both Katie and Adam broke our school record again today,” Boyle said. “It shows how young our program is, but it’s still great to do.”

The Eudora girls, led by Sisson, Megan Ballock and Brittney Graff, took second place out of nine teams in the girls race. Mill Valley took second place in the boys race, led by All-State runner Jay Matlack, who finished second.

The Seahawks run again Thursday at the Lansing Invitational.
